Maximising productivity

Over the past month and a half, there’s been a lot of change happening all over the world. For many of us, that’s involved a dramatic shift in our work environment. Working from home has provided a new set of challenges – it can be distracting, especially when there are other people in the house or kids who need care.

When you’re in such a familiar environment you associate with relaxation, it can be hard to be productive even in a home office. So, what can you do to maximise productivity, especially in a climate where there’s a lot of stress and uncertainty about what’s happening in the coming months?

Setting up a working space is ideal. Whether it’s at a desk or at the dining room table, having a dedicated space gets you in the mindset to work. Make sure you have all the necessary tools you need for your work as well, and that they’re in an easily accessible place in your work station.

It’s difficult to minimise distraction if you live with other people, but if you can find a quiet space or have some music to listen to, you can settle into a place where you’re focused on your work.

Routines are also extremely important. If you take your lunch break at a certain time at work, take it at the same time at home. Your start and finish times shouldn’t change either unless your workload calls for it – it’s good to keep a pattern so you can stay on task and feel like you’re still in a productive work environment.

If you’re feeling restless and can’t focus, it’s a good idea to take a break, particularly if you work at a screen. Make yourself a snack or a cup of tea, but small breaks are necessary if you want to come back to your work feeling refreshed.
