Over the last 4 weeks, we have been setting the framework and mechanics of the two distinct processes that go into ultimately achieving your goals in life.

If you look again at our attached graphic that hopefully, you have grown to appreciate and ponder, in this article, you will be guided through Step 1 of the Goal setting process.

The first step of this process is where you get to pick and choose your desired goals. (imagine an excited child in a candy shop!)

Note the word ‘desire’. If you have an aversion to the word ‘desire’ you can replace that with ‘aspire’.

Over the last few weeks, we established that the first step of the goal-setting process involves the use of your potent conscious mind and your beautiful heart.

As a recap, the conscious mind is your logical mind which focuses on the ‘now’, being a sense of time, your external environment and your physical reality.

So with that in mind, let’s begin our journey into the goal-setting process.

Getting to know the real ‘you’!

Notice the first step of goal setting is not about actually setting goals, but it is about something a little deeper and personal. The first step is about boldly and honestly defining the real ‘you’.

In other words, it is similar to taking a stock-take of your ‘being’.

We now need to actually stop reading and start thinking and writing (in a piece of paper preferably but it is also ok to type it on your digital device).

So find yourself you a quiet place where you are not distracted. If you cannot find this space and time right now, you can do it later when you are in the right environment.

So here are 5 questions that you should answer honestly. After you write down whatever comes to your conscious mind or comes from your heart, review it for the next 7 days and add as necessary. Never delete or remove any answers, just add! (the reason for this will be explained in the next part of this series).

  1. Write down a list of accomplishments in your life/ or achievements you are proud of? (this can be anything that comes to mind. It is not necessarily about winning an award, it can be a simple as, for example, ‘having great friends’ or ‘having a child’.
  • Write down your strengths. (for example, ‘I am great at cooking’ or ‘I am a great manager of people’.). This is an area many people struggle with. Dig deeper! Find at least 10 strengths. If you need help, ask the people around you who genuinely care for you.
  • Write down what your core values in life are. (Values are life principles that are important to you, for example’ ‘honesty’, ‘family’, ‘love’.. you get the gist?)
  • Complete the below sentence with as many words that come to your mind.  (ideally come up with at least 10)

I love ______________________

(for example, I love my kids, I love my dog, I love Rugby League, I love going on holidays)

  • Complete the below sentence and come up with at least 5 answers.

If I had unlimited time and money in my life, I would _______________________________

(for example, If I had unlimited time and money in my life I would ‘go on holidays 6 months a year).

Congratulations! You have now completed the first process in the Goal Setting and Achievement process.

Many of you will wonder why the above questions?

This process will ultimately align your inner self, your soul, to the setting and finally, the achievement of your goals.

Goals set in line with your values and your true self are easier to achieve than those at that are not.
